These questions arose in my mind because though Baldwin wrote The Fire Next Time several decades ago, the issues he covered are as valid today as they were then and perhaps, on a far bigger scale. After all, as a nation, we have just experienced the trauma of September 11th, post which, we need to really ask ourselves as to why the United States became a target for such hatred?

Baldwin’s writing enriched me personally and left me with a deep resolve to individually try and play a role in building a society that is ‘without prejudice.’ It also strengthened my understanding that any identity we have should emerge from universal values of love and equality and not be rooted in any individual ...
